Why Strength Training Is One of the Best Things You Can Do for Your Health

Strength training isn't just about lifting heavy weights or building bigger muscles. It's about creating a stronger, healthier body that allows you to move better, stay active, and continue doing the things you enjoy.

At Four Horsman Fitness in Golden, Colorado, strength training is one of the foundations of how we coach our clients. Whether you're brand new to the gym, trying to get stronger, dealing with limitations, or simply want to feel better in everyday life, a well-designed strength program can make a major difference.

What Is Strength Training?

Strength training uses resistance to challenge your muscles and gradually make your body stronger. That resistance can come from barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, machines, resistance bands, or even your own body weight.

Exercises such as squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, lunges, and carries can all be part of a strength training program.

But good strength training isn't just about doing exercises. It's about choosing the right exercises, learning proper technique, and progressing them appropriately for your body and goals.

The Benefits of Strength Training

One of the biggest misconceptions about strength training is that it's only for athletes or people who want to build muscle. In reality, strength training can benefit almost everyone.

1. Build and Maintain Muscle

As we age, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important. Regular resistance training helps build and preserve muscle mass, allowing you to stay stronger and more capable throughout life.

2. Improve Everyday Life

Strength in the gym should carry over to life outside the gym.

Getting off the floor, carrying groceries, climbing stairs, working around the house, playing with your kids or grandkids, hiking, skiing, biking, and participating in your favorite activities all require strength.

Our goal isn't simply to help you lift more weight. We want to help you build strength that makes everyday life easier.

3. Support Strong Bones

Resistance training places healthy stress on the body and can help support bone strength. This becomes especially important as we get older and want to remain active and independent.

4. Improve Balance and Stability

A good strength program trains more than individual muscles. It teaches your body to produce and control force.

Exercises that strengthen your legs, hips, core, and upper body can also improve stability, coordination, and confidence with movement.

5. Support Fat Loss and Body Composition

Strength training can also play an important role in changing body composition.

Instead of focusing only on burning calories, we want clients to build and maintain muscle while improving their nutrition and activity levels. Combining strength training with adequate protein, good nutrition, and consistent daily movement can be a powerful approach for reducing body fat while maintaining lean muscle.

Strength Training and Mobility Should Work Together

Being strong is important, but strength is even more useful when you can move well.

That's why we combine strength training with mobility and corrective exercise at Four Horsman Fitness.

If someone struggles to squat comfortably, for example, simply adding more weight may not be the best solution. We may first work on ankle mobility, hip mobility, stability, positioning, or technique.

The goal is to identify what each person needs and build their training around it.

Strength + mobility = a body that is strong and capable of moving well.

You Don't Have to Be in Shape Before Starting

One of the most common things we hear from new clients is:

"I need to get in better shape before I start working with a trainer."

You don't.

That's what training is for.

A beginner doesn't need to perform the same exercises, weights, or intensity as someone who has been training for years. A good personal training program meets you where you currently are and progresses from there.

You might start with a modified squat, light dumbbells, basic mobility work, and simple conditioning. Over time, those movements can progress as your strength, mobility, and confidence improve.

Strength Training Should Be Individualized

Not everyone's workout should look exactly the same.

Two people of the same age can have completely different training needs. One person may need additional shoulder mobility while another needs more stability. Someone may be training to hike Colorado mountains while another simply wants to get stronger and move without discomfort.

That's why our small group personal training sessions at Four Horsman Fitness are limited to 2–6 people.

Even when several people are training at the same time, their workouts can be adjusted based on their goals, abilities, limitations, and experience.

We combine four major areas of fitness:

Strength. Endurance. Mobility. Corrective Exercise.

These pillars allow us to build more complete programs instead of focusing on just one aspect of fitness.

How Often Should You Strength Train?

For many people, strength training 2–4 days per week can be a great starting point.

More isn't always better.

Consistency, recovery, nutrition, exercise selection, and progressive overload all matter. Two well-designed workouts performed consistently every week can often produce better results than training six days one week and then doing nothing for the next two.

The best training program is one you can consistently follow and progressively improve.
